I Free Myself

In 2001 a woman who was experiencing depression and feeling very stuck in her life asked me to write her a chant to help her. I was going through a very difficult transition in my own life, newly a single mother and not sure what I would be doing, and so wrote this also for myself. I really wanted something to sing forcefully and resolutely when the waves of uncertainty threatened to pull me under.

I love the way the alliteration in the first lines feel in my mouth as I sing it: I free myself and move forward fearlessly! It feels wonderfully powerful to me when I sing it emphasizing the F's! This is a great chant for taking strongly affirmative action for a needed change.

I also love the expansive feeling that co-arises with the solid earthiness and drive of this chant! Determination and surrender in dynamic synergy... I like to have everyone chant this at the end of a deep healing and awakening group, encouraging them to move to it, using their hands and body to really express loosening their hold on what no longer serves them and letting it go.

I Free Myself

(For moving forward in life and letting go of what no longer serves us)

I free myself and move forward fearlessly
I free myself and move forward fearlessly
I now loosen my hold
And I let go of the old
I now loosen my hold
And I let go of the old
